Letter boards, chalkboard inspiration, mirror messages, quotes, call them what you want, but they are everywhere and people tend to feel very strongly about them. Either people L O V E them or hate them with equal force. I fall into the former group, I L O V E them.
While mentally ruminating on something, be it positive or negative, when my eye catches a quote that I can relate too I feel it. It’s funny, I don’t read it, I feel it, I do.
It helps snap me out of whatever groove my needle is stuck on and I can feel the relief of having something to relate to. In a sense it makes my thoughts feel seen and tangible.
For Christmas Brett and the kids got me a letter board and since then, I have put quotes on the wall to help set the intention of our week, to coincide with the mood of our family in that moment, or to put into sight a daily reminder of a value we hold. It’s been a nice, quiet way of continuing my path as a parent to these not so littles, without having to sit and “lecture” them on a value I see could be worked on.
It’s also a nice, quiet way to remind them as well that Mommy is still just a human, learning and growing alongside them and sometimes, she need little quiet reminders too.
I don’t tell them a new quote is up, I just change it and wait to see their reaction. These words, have been a wonderful conversation starter and link between me and the kids during our busy weeks. They bring them up while we are driving in the car and ask questions, comment on what the quote means to them, or why they think I picked that particular one for the week.
Words hold a lot of meaning, the words we speak to each other and especially the words we speak to ourselves. I gravitate to the words people choose to use in their lives because I believe it bares who they are. You hear, “action speaks louder than words” all the time, and while that can be true in certain incidents, once the words leave your lips or loop long enough in your mind, they almost can never be taken back.
People show you who they are with the words they choose to share with the world and with themselves it’s our job to be on the look out for what they are really saying.
Here are just a few quotes we have shared with over the last few weeks…
